
Óbidos
Óbidos is a town in the Portuguese district of Leiria, Centro region and subregion of the Western part of West Tourism Region, with about 3100 inhabitants.
Contrary to what one might think, the name does not derive from Óbidos paronym deaths, but the Latin word oppidum, meaning “citadel”, “fortified city”. Around it stands the Roman settlement of Eburobrittium.
Have been taken from the Moors in 1148, and received the first letter of the charter in 1195 under the reign of King Sancho I. Óbidos was part of the dowry of several queens of Portugal, namely Urraca of Castile (wife of D. Afonso II), Queen Santa Isabel (wife of King Dinis), Philippa of Lancaster (wife of John I.), Leonor of Aragon (wife of Duarte), Eleanor of Portugal (wife of John II), among others.
