Fátima
At about 29 km from Tomar, Fatima is the largest parish of the municipality of the district of Santarem, and an important pilgrimage center for the Catholic world.
Born in the limestone rock formations and of Serra de Aire and lamps, where they dominate the landscape barren and rocky soil and limestone, until 1917, Fatima was a totally unknown town where only the trees more resistant, could withstand the adverse weather and territory represented.
Caters for grazing and dry farming to life in this quiet village found itself radically changed with the religious phenomena of the Apparitions of Our Lady to three shepherd children. These events determined the whole future of, what is now a large Portuguese village recognized worldwide as a place of faith and where every year thousands of visitors come from all over the globe.
